Surgeon’s Scalpel or Dull Penknife?

God, in His divine plan for our existence, is working to transform us into the image of Christ. We started in the Garden of Eden as His creation, made in His likeness, but because of the entry of sin and its potent devastation, we are left broken and twisted. Help comes supernaturally through Jesus Christ.

One strong motivation to be people impacted by the Word of God is this: God’s Word is one of His most powerful means for changing our lives!

The author of Hebrews reminds us of this very fact. Speaking of the dire consequences Israel faced from their disobedience, he says,

“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:12,13 NIV).

Shouldn’t we be serious about making God’s Word an important part of our lives? You see, God’s Word is “sharper than a double-edged sword.” The living and active Word of God cuts like a surgeon’s scalpel, getting down into the motivations, deceptions, and hidden places of our heart. Only God’s Word can get to the core of who we are and restore our hearts and souls. While counselors, friends, self-help books, and teachers may bring insights to our lives, only the Scriptures can penetrate into the core of our being and bring transformative change.

Is there an area of life where you need God to enter in and bring repair and healing? Is there an area of life where you suspect you may be living in error or outside God’s desires? Are you allowing God’s Word to speak into the heart of the matter?
