Whether we know it or not, we live in a treacherous world. Jesus’ disciple Peter put it this way:
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings (1 Peter 5:8,9 NIV).
With our access to more information, more media, and more people, comes an increase in temptation. People who try to live life without the consistent instruction of the Scriptures are living in harm’s way without the protection provided by God. Like a whitewater rafter without a life vest, followers of Christ who ignore the resource of God’s Word are living a life of unnecessary risk.
John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (NIV). Jesus was appealing to His Father to protect His followers in a dangerous world, and to set them apart with lives that are not tainted by the ugly things of this sin-stained world.
Here’s what the psalmist says regarding the role God’s commands can play in our lives. (Amazing!)
How can a young man keep his way pure?
By living according to your word.
I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you (Psalm 119:9-11 NIV).
Memorizing, meditating on, and living according to God’s words and commands are “life vests” for us in a perilous world.
Are there areas of temptation that you are especially vulnerable to?
What does God’s Word say that might speak into your heart concerning this area of challenge?
