Antidote for Darkness

There’s no question. The prince of darkness is alive and well. Consider this:

  • Within 21 weeks into 2018, there have already been 23 school shootings, according to CNN.
  • The genocide and refugee crisis in Syria, Myanmar, and other countries around the world.
  • The prevalence of sexual and domestic abuse.
  • The pervasiveness of sexual brokenness in our culture.

Sometimes, it’s as if a gray cloud sits over our world, creating disillusionment and depression. Jesus commissions us each to a type of heroism, courageously living in a way that brings light into the darkness. It is what we are called to as believers. Jesus used this illustration to describe citizens of God’s Kingdom:

You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden . . . . In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:14,16)

Jesus didn’t say that our words are the source of light. It is our goodness lived out that makes people sit up and take notice!

Consider your current situations, relationships, and the darkness you see. Are there simple ways you can bring light into those contexts during the next few days?
