Defining Moments of an Underdog

When I think back on my life, one defining moment as a Christ-following influencer (a leader in my sphere of influence) happened when I was in college at TCU.

I had come to faith in Christ my freshman year and at the end of my junior year I was asked by the senior leadership to led the ministry for my senior year. My leadership team was made up of a handful of good friends—the same people who had lead me to Christ three years earlier. They knew more than I did. I did not feel qualified, and was scared to death that fall semester when things started up! Nonetheless, God used me as I clung to Him and heard Him through the Scriptures.

Two lessons have stuck with me from that time and continue to impact how I influence and lead others:

  1. God enjoys using the unexpected underdog (even me)!

“The least of you will become a thousand, the smallest a mighty nation.
I am the Lord; in its time I will do this swiftly” (Isaiah 60:22 NIV).

  1. As a Christ-following influencer and leader, we must hear the voice of God and depend on Him for direction and the words to say.

“For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, and from his mouth men should seek instruction—because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty” (Malachi 2:7 NIV).

Looking back on your life, what is a defining moment for you as an influencer, and what lessons did you learn? When you are leading and influencing others, how can you be sure that you are a “messenger of the Lord Almighty”?
