Posture of Faith #3: Submitted Feet

I’m the grandson of the owner of a small Chicago trucking firm, a business only “strong, tough men can enter.” I was taught early on in life that “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” was the way to succeed in life. The infamous phrase “God helps those who help themselves” was prevalent as well.

I’m sure there are a few “self-made” men or women reading this. Funny thing though—this way of thinking, while very American, is not biblical.

Remember Jehoshaphat? Enemies were bearing down on him and he had no idea what to do! Well, God basically told “King J” to tell his army commanders to show up to the battle with all their battle clothes on and just watch! The Spirit of the Lord said, “You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the LORD will give you . . .” (2 Chronicles 20:17 NIV).

Now, honestly, if this happened today, I can only imagine the remarks and laughter. Go out and stand there? You’ve got to be kidding!

Well, I’m no better at listening to God’s invitations to relax or give up control than the next person. But, that is exactly what God requires of us. To put our plans on hold and wait for Him is particularly difficult when we hit chaos and difficulties in life.

The third posture: Submitted Feet.

We experience God’s best when our next steps and actions are put in His control, submitted to His directions and ways—whether that means standing still or moving forward (see 2 Chronicles 20:17 NIV).

Do you struggle giving up control of your life and actions? What kinds of situations make you want to keep control and depend on yourself rather than God and His ways? TRY THIS: Bring a difficult situation you are facing to Him in prayer and tell Him you are giving up your control. Ask Him to help you submit your feet to His next steps!
