Hold Me by the Hand

A number of years ago, I faced a work challenge that had me feeling very alone. At times, I wondered whether I’d make it through. It was during those days that the Holy Spirit seemed to tattoo onto my soul a verse from Isaiah 41. It was as if this little promise, and all that it means, had been emblazoned on my heart:

“For I am the Lord Your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you’” (Isaiah 41:13 NIV).

From that moment on, a picture comes to mind every time I think of this verse. It’s a picture from long ago, when my kids were small, of me walking with one of my daughters—she’s holding my right hand. What confidence it gave her, a little toddler unsure of the rocks on the path, to take the next step. Why? Because of whose right hand she was holding!

Jesus encouraged His followers to come to Him as little children (see Matthew 18:3). I can think of no better way of coming to Him as a child, then living life with my hand firmly in His. We can have the same confidence my daughter did.

Whose hand are you holding onto today?
