The first car I drove after getting my license was a 1970 Ford Pinto Hatchback. You may have heard of them; they were recalled because of the gas tank exploding! When I went to college I took a well-used 1968 Ford station wagon. A few years later, I bought my first new car, a Ford Fiesta! I think you are getting the picture—my pocket book didn’t allow me to pick from the “top of the line” row at the dealership (the cars with all the extras). I don’t have a big problem with auto lust, but I wouldn’t mind taking a drive in a BMW or Audi sedan every once in a while!

When God made man, He didn’t hold back any of the options or extras. While a Ford Pinto or Fiesta might be analogous to a land crab or sea anemone, human beings would be in the same showcase as a Bugatti or a Lamborghini. Even as we consider the amazing moon and stars, how does man measure up? Listen to what God has to say about the matter.

When I consider your heavens,

                        the work of your fingers,
            the moon and the stars,
                        which you have set in place,
            what is man that you are mindful of him,
                        the son of man that you care for him?
            You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
                        and crowned him with glory and honor.
            You made him ruler over the works of your hands;
                        you put everything under his feet… (Psalm 8:3-6).
Only the angels are a bit higher in regard to created abilities. However, humankind has this going for us:
  • We were made in His image, meaning we have moral decision-making ability.
  • We are given glory and honor—something we know God deserves.
  • He has made us the ruler of all He has made.

Consider . . .  this is the designed purpose of every human being!What would it be like if we lived up to that destiny? Why do we forget or ignore these truths and settle for a Pinto?
